## What Happened
Our final K-Lab of 2025 was as impactful as it was thought-provoking. Back in December, we gathered online to discuss the concept of—Disruption. What it is, how it happens, how it’s unfolding presently in our lives. 
I learned a lot from our group and considered the topic from angles I wouldn’t have thought about on my own. 

## Diverse Thinkers
Our valued participants, who tuned in from across the world, all had important thoughts to add to the conversation.
For example, below you’ll the work of three different participants working together to flesh out an understanding of how the internet collapses distance and gatekeeping world-wide.

Since everyone is encouraged to embrace their agency and actively participate, we got to experience what each person brought to the conversation. 
In addition to joining the conversation live, people can choose to participate asynchronously. Meaning you can contribute ideas on your own time!

## Disruptions Throughout History

On the topic of Disruption, here are some significant events over human-history that changed the direction of the world: 

**1440:** Gutenberg invents the Printing Press and completely changes our ability to share information 


**1760: **The Industrial Revolution begins and the increase in manufacturing creates a level of material abundance never before seen in human history


**1970**s: The invention of the Personal Computer. A significant feature being advanced word processing capabilities–before the PC people relied on type-writers

**1983**: Invention of the Internet! Talk about disruption. As you’re well-aware this technology which turned modern life of its head by providing the individual and with access unprecedented to information
Late 1990s: The Internet is common amongst households following the release of Windows 95 

**2010**s: Smartphones are commonplace. Calculator, navigation tool, mobile phone, and flashlight, these are just some of the tools we now have at our fingertips. 

This brings to mind the disruptions that we are currently living through:

**2026**: Both the internet and artificial intelligence play a central role in our society both socially and economically. This has benefits and challenges:

The Benefits:
- Ease of access to information


- A globally connected population


- Increased ability to reach people (phone, text, video call)


- Increased productivity


The Challenges:
- Sedentary lifestyle


- Internet addiction


- Information overload / paralysis


- Increased awareness leading to a feeling of powerlessness

## Living Through Disruption
Living through disruption, although not a new experience in human history, is destabilizing and creates a feeling of uncertainty and apprehension. 
With the increasing sophistication of Artificial Intelligence these feelings are palpable. 
It’s as though we’re on the edge of our seats waiting to see what will happen. Will AI become an era-defining disruption? It seems very possible. 
And perhaps AI isn’t the only technology that will send waves through our day-to-day lives. 
Perhaps there are elements of today’s society that we’re not consciously recognizing as massively disruptive—things we will only be able to identify in hindsight. 
But that’s enough speculation for now, I’ll wait for the next K-Lab to expand on these ideas. 

## K-Lab as Disruption

Information overload can paralyze and leave us in a state of hopelessness. During a time when isolation, confusion and powerlessness are commonplace—the Knowledge Lab creates a disruption by providing a means of connection. 

By encouraging presence, open-mindedness and non-judgement, a K-Lab facilitates the shift from passive consumption to active construction.
There is no prerequisite knowledge or specific expertise required— all voices are welcome and valued. 

In fact, by sharing the mental load of considering these big topics, we’re taking away the pressure and instead creating a spacious environment where there are no bad ideas.

The Knowledge Lab as Disruption: A Deeper Reflection

Hi all!

Back in October we hosted an amazing K-Lab where we got together and covered a wide-range of topics ranging from the noosphere to the collaborative process.  

### Returning Participants & Dropping-in to Deeper Discussion:

There were people tuning in from South America, North America, Africa and Europe! In addition to each of our participants bringing forward their unique perspective—we had several people who have attended one or more K-Labs previously. 

This consistency made for a specifically interesting conversation because it meant that certain themes were carried through from past sessions into the present one. We’re now going further in depth with topics that come up more than once—topics like cognitive sovereignty, free will and entropy.

### New Forms of Learning & the Noosphere:

As humans evolve, the noosphere—our collective intelligence—evolves alongside us. And as we become more technologically sophisticated, it’s inevitable that our methods for communicating ideas do so as well. 

In 1440, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press, and it was this technology that forever changed the way we learn and express ourselves. Since then, we’ve seen technological developments snowball into the rapid expansion of complex technology.

#### How does this affect the noosphere?

Our individual thought processes and forms of communication don’t exist in a vacuum. Our collective human cognition—the noosphere—is an intricate web of inter-connected ideas that is shared between all of human-kind. Much like how the biosphere that surrounds our planet holds our physical reality, the noosphere holds space for our ideas and methods of learning. 

In our modern day and age, it feels as though this web is more complex than it’s ever been. Sophisticated technology increasing at exponential intervals leaves us in completely uncharted territory. The snowball is the biggest and the fastest that it’s ever been. 

So, what does it mean now that we can now task a digital assistant to perform both daily tasks and complex calculations instead of doing them ourselves?

I’m not entirely sure, but do I think that it’s important that we imbue intention and thoughtfulness into the systems of thinking that architect our reality. This applies both to large language models and to the noosphere at large. 

I’m really grateful to have explored this topic in October’s K-Lab because these weren’t topics that were on my mind beforehand. Now, two months later—I’m still thinking about our collective systems of understanding the world and how we share that knowledge with others.

I’m very excited to continue mulling this over at the next K-Lab this December 17th.

### What’s a K-Lab?

For those of you who aren't familiar, a K-Lab is a multi-modality group conversation. Written words, thought bubbles and spoken thoughts all factor in to the engaging and intuitive process of collaborative ideation.  

Our process empowers team-members to express themselves via multiple mediums, allowing for more opportunity for each person to contribute to the conversation.

Additionally, our AI integration allows for the chatbot of your choice to generate a comprehensive summary and what was discussed, allowing for your group's good ideas to be captured and displayed in a way that is easy to reference later on.

A World Wide Web of Ideas- expanding on themes from previous sessions

### 🌱 What's New? 

Earlier this fall, we hosted another fantastic K-Lab where I had the unique experience of attending as an asynchronous participant.  

### 🧠 What is a K-Lab? 

For those of you who don’t know, a Knowledge Lab is a session mindfully-designed to create space to develop ideas–big or small. 

We don’t know the power of our own imagination until we allow ourselves permission to sit with our thoughts and mindfully describe what comes to mind, whatever that might be! 

That’s the power of a Knowledge Lab—it finds a way to get out the ideas that have been lingering in the un-visited corners of our minds. Weird, unconventional, incomplete—a K-Lab is a space where all ideas are welcome. 

### 💭 Attending Asynchronously

For this session, I attended as an asynchronous participant, tuning in after the live meeting and adding bubbles on my own time. 

Even though I wasn’t present in real-time as the session was unfolding, I still managed to get a lot of value out of the experience. This is in part because of the utility and intuitive nature of our platform Web-Idea-Pro. 

Before I began to add my own bubbles to the Co-Construction space, I took a moment to make space for inspiration. I closed my eyes, took some deep breaths and invited in my creative self—the version of me that doesn’t judge whether an idea is good or bad. 

Then, I considered the theme of the session—Autopoiesis, a word that, up until that point, I had never heard before.

### 🤖AI Tool
	
As an asynchronous participant, it felt a bit daunting to look at all the work accomplished by previous participants. There were so many bubbles leading to so many different ideas, forming these unlikely threads of carefully considered thoughts. It was beautiful to see and it was also a lot to digest.

This is where the AI Tool came in handy. In Web-Idea-Pro, pressing the AI button provides a robust prompt to input into the generative AI assistant of your choice. I used Google Gemini(I’m cycling through different assistants at the moment, I’ll try another one next time) and received a summary of the group’s work. 

From there, I was able to inquire further about how different ideas and concepts are connected.

### 🌐 Co-Construction Results:

The themes covered were diverse in nature and related to each other in ways I wouldn’t have been able to see on my own. 

Some of our topics included:

	-Autopoiesis - “A property of living things”
	-Cognitive Liberty - “Free will” 
	-Attention - “Where energy goes, neural firing flows”
	-Noosphere - “Collective Consciousness” 
	-Psychological Safety - “the right to make errors” 

### 💡 My Contributions:

It was incredible seeing the dots connected between these not-so-simple concepts. I was happy to make a humble contribution on the topics of visual management, team-collaboration and the state of the universe being in constant change. What a wild variety of topics! I can safely say that there is no other scenario in my life where I’m prompted to think about subjects in such a flexible and fluid way. 

The structure of the K-Lab provides just enough guidance to facilitate creative thinking and is otherwise totally flexible and gives the feel of being un-structured while providing a supportive container for new ideas to come forward. 

### 🌍 Who Joined?

So who was at the session? As usual, we had a fantastic group of participants. With people tuning in from three different continents, four different countries and seven different cities—the session represented perspectives from all over the globe.

Even better, we had several previous participants returning to participate again! 

As I myself attend more and more K-Labs, I’m beginning to see how magical it can be to continue to expand upon ideas and concepts not only through the course of a session, but over multiple sessions over the course of several months.

#### ✨Final Thoughts

All in all, this was a great experience for me and I look forward to getting even deeper into these concepts and others with both returning and new participants.

Autopoiesis & More —My First Asynchronous K-Lab

###  The Topic

In May, we hosted a global K-Lab session that invited participants from all over the world to explore a deceptively simple question: What is attention? This gathering brought together both longtime participants and first-timers for a unique exchange of ideas through silent ideation, reflective breathing, and collaborative inquiry.

### Opening Circle

To start, participants were invited to share their names, locations, and motivations. 

** John** (Washington, D.C.): K-Lab regular, happy to be part of the community.


** Meme** (Ghana): First-timer, didn’t know what to expect, but excited to learn.


** Bertrand** (Kitchener): DevOps and AI specialist, joined to reconnect with Joel and explore relevant themes.


** Dalila** (Algeria): Works in a technical research centre, joined to practice English and engage after her students participated in a previous K-Lab.

### Grounding: Creating Space for New Ideas 

Next, Joel set the tone by reminding us: 

   "**When we create space in the mind, we create space to pay attention to ideas that arise.**"


With that reminder, the group took a moment to breathe in and out with presence. 

For me, this practice has always revealed something about my state of mind and today as I paused to reflect on the session’s central question—What is attention?—here’s what surfaced:

Attention is where I place my focus, consciously or unconsciously. If I’m not mindful, my attention goes to places I don’t want. Taking the time to be present helps me to notice where my attention likes to go and provides me with the opportunity to shift it in a constructive direction. 

### Silent Co-Construction

In the co-construction phase, participants worked in silence to generate insights. Here are some key prompts and ideas that surfaced on the theme of Attention.

**What is Attention?**

- Priorities
-"In the zone"
- Focus


**What is Sovereignty?**
- “I am the king of my kingdom”

**What senses help us pay attention?**

- Intuition (a “sixth sense”?)


**What is Learning?**
- “Each one of us has a different way of seeing the context and sharing that unique view” 
- Belief revision, phenomenology, epistemology
- “Learning allows me to acquire what I need to survive”

**What is Knowledge?**
- “Knowledge is a pattern of neurons that fire together”
- Phenomenology (how we understand concepts / words)
- Epistemology (study of knowledge)


**Can We Pay Attention While Stressed?**
- Each one of us has a different way of seeing the context 
- “Where attention goes, neural firing flows”


**How Do We Share Knowledge?**
 
- Storytelling, collaboration, people-process-tech
- People, process, technical frameworks

### Sharing Phase: Connecting the Dots

Using the Laser Tool, participants explained the meaning behind their thought bubbles..

In watching the video of the session and reviewing participants' thought bubbles on Web-Idea-Pro, I’m blown away by the quality of ideas. There were some fantastic insights that expanded my perspective on the topic of attention, but also on the topics of knowledge, learning, sovereignty and human connection. 

This was an all-encompassing K-Lab that generated a wide-ranging set of insights. 

“**I loved this experience because it shows collaboration, but also it shows different points of view… In life people think there’s only one truth and it’s nice to see people from different places and professions.**” -Bertrand 


### Closing Circle 

It’s here where participants shared their comments, learnings, ideas and feelings. The feedback was super positive with participants enjoying their K-Lab experience and looking forward to the next one. 

Meme said, “**Please invite me back!**”


Dalila said described the session as, “**an enriching experience**”


John loved the diversity and opportunity for dialogue


Bertrand valued the collaboration between participants and the diversity of perspectives

These sessions continue to remind me that attention isn’t just a mental skill—it’s a form of presence. And when we give it space, surprising insights can arise, not just for ourselves, but for the whole group.

“What Is Attention?” — A Global K-Lab Exploration

Earlier this year, we gathered online for an interactive, French-language “Super Collab” — In This session, we used AI to help organize our ideas in a real-time exploration of how humans can learn and grow alongside AI. It was part conversation, part collaboration, and completely engaging. 

Here’s a look at what we created together:

**Participants**

This “Super Collab” had a vibrant energy with participants joining from all corners of the world — including Africa, Switzerland, and North Carolina. I tuned in from Vancouver and was happy for the opportunity to practice my French and hear the diverse perspectives of the other participants.

**Co-Construction Consciente**

This session centred around a theme we’ve been exploring in depth this year: **Active Learning in Relation to AI**.

During the ideation period, or co-construction, we reflected on powerful questions like:

- What is inherent to human nature? What can people do to improve themselves on an individual basis? 


- How can use human-machine integration to connect more deeply with our own humanity?


- Is it possible that artificial intelligence can increase human intelligence?

**Dialogue avec le chat IA**

After a thoughtful co-construction period, we began a dialogue with various generative AI models. We asked Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, and Mistral to summarize the “concepts clés” from our collaborative whiteboard.

Claude noted:

“Ce tableau montre une approche équilibrée entre technologie et humanité, soulignant l'importance de l'apprentissage continu.”

Translation:

*This whiteboard shows a balanced approach between technology and humanity, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning.*

 Gemini said:

"Il soulève des questions cruciales sur le rôle de l'homme dans le développement de l'IA et comment nous pouvons utiliser l'IA pour améliorer nos capacités et résoudre des problèmes complexes.”


Translation:

*It raises crucial questions about the role of humans in the development of AI and how we can use AI to enhance our capabilities and solve complex problems.*

**Cercle de Fermeture**

To wind down after a powerful session, we began our closing circle. It’s here where participants shared reflections and feedback and takeaways. 
Some of their key thoughts included:

- Intégrer les nouveaux outils

- Développer la capacité de réfléchir

- Intégrer les aspects philosophiques

- Apprécier la richesse de la diversité


All in all, participants commented positively on their experience, calling it: 

“Super bien!” - *Very good!*

“Ça nous fait plaisir!” - *It was our pleasure!*

“Inscrivez-vous!” - *Sign-up!*


I too found this collab to be *super bien*! It was an enriching experience and I learned a lot from the participants and the discussion we had. I can’t wait for our next one!

Exploring Active Learning and AI: Highlights from Our February Super Collab

Our most recent Knowledge Lab was a lively session full of meaningful conversation. This time, we had the pleasure of hosting participants from all over the world! The session’s collaborators zoomed in from Italy, Switzerland, France, Maryland, Montreal and Kitchener—making for a conversation filled with diverse perspectives. 

For most, it was their first time using Web-Idea-Pro, the platform which allowed the group to create bubbles and join ideas together during the collaborative ideation process. 

The collaboration process was supported by the intentional facilitation of the AIA team. To begin exploring inter-connected ideas and concepts, AIA founder Joel Muzard guided the group through a brief meditation bringing emphasis to the importance of focused attention, or as the saying goes, where attention goes, energy flows.

During the Knowledge Lab, we explored several themes surrounding how artificial intelligence informs human learning and evolution. The discussion ranged widely, from exploring the architecture of generative AI through a philosophical lens to examining how AI can support us in problem-solving and many things in-between. After the silent ideation period, there was lots for us to discuss and the conversation focused on three key areas:

AI as an Amplifier We explored how AI can amplify human expression and serve as a catalyst for deeper collective thinking. The group discussed ways to harness the ever-expanding arsenal of AI tools to better achieve our collective goals.

Human-Machine Integration We discussed how human-machine integration might help us connect more deeply with our own humanity, particularly when it comes to developing new approaches to problem-solving and thinking.

The Human Edge Perhaps most importantly, we examined what qualities remain uniquely human as AI becomes increasingly sophisticated. Together, we identified four key elements: learning, empathy, creation, and collaboration.

The experience was well-received by all, with participants feeling refreshed and energized by the quality and depth of conversation. The Web-Idea-Pro whiteboard format particularly stood out, providing helpful structure and enabling each participant to make meaningful contributions.

From the perspective of the AIA team, it was fantastic to meet new faces and a joy to exchange such bright ideas.
